West Norfolk Swimming Club second in Junior Fenland League opener against Mildenhall, Thetford, Bottisham and Peterborough City

The younger members of West Norfolk Swimming Club were back in action on Saturday for the first round of this year’s Junior Fenland League.

The opener at the newly opened Mildenhall Leisure Center saw West Norfolk secure second place when they took on Mildenhall, Thetford, Bottisham and Peterborough City ‘B’ team.

The evening started well with the consecutive victories of Alexander Pattinson and Milly Johnson in the two opening events (Boys & Girls 12 and under 100m individual medley respectively).

This then launched a streak of 14 wins from 45 races for West Norfolk.

Pattinson and Olivia Haddock picked up a pair of victories in the 12 and under 50m freestyle events before Oliver Veale clinched first place in the boys 10 and under 50m backstroke.

Johnson won two more races for girls 12 and under in the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly.

Meanwhile, Callum New came first in the men’s 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke events for the same age category.

Eloise Collins (13 and under 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley), while Thomas Elsdon (11/u 50m backstroke) also won two first places; Logan Greenwood (9/u 50m backstroke) and Marley Bellamy (10/u 50m butterfly) each had one victory each.

At the end of the evening’s proceedings, West Norfolk finished in second place, just eight points behind the Thetford side.

West Norfolk Swimming Club coach Oliver Kenny said: “It was a great achievement after illness caused a number of last-minute team changes and withdrawals.”

Final standings after 45 events: Thetford Dolphins – 160 points, West Norfolk – 152, City of Peterborough ‘B’ – 142, Bottisham – 112, Mildenhall Sharks – 78.
