On Sunday July 10, the Benalla Swimming Club organized its first swimming meet since the start of the pandemic. The short course encounter took place in the 25m indoor pool at the Benalla Aquatic Center. It was fantastic for the swimmers from Benalla to be able to compete in their pool with other competitors from the North East and Melbourne.
The club was well represented across the events, with all Benalla swimmers achieving personal bests in one or more events. Senior swimmer Liam Kidgell recorded a Victorian National qualifying time in the 100m backstroke event.
Liam Kidgell: 1st: 100m backstroke, 200m IM (4 individual strokes); 2nd: 100m freestyle; 3rd: 200m freestyle.
Ellen Sambell: 2nd: 100m butterfly.
Patrick Sambell: 1st: 50m butterfly; 2nd: 50m freestyle, 100m individual medley; 4th: 100m freestyle.
Libby Ferguson: 2nd: 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle; 4th: 100m breaststroke, 100m IM.
Xavier Hall: 2nd: 50m backstroke; 3rd: 50m breaststroke; 4th: 200m freestyle.
Relay teams: 2nd: 14&O 200m freestyle and 200m medley; 4th: 13&U 200m freestyle.
This was the first meeting organized by the new committee and the day went well, with excellent feedback from Swimming Victoria officials. Special thanks go to all the volunteers who helped out that day and especially to Catherine and Jo, who were the event coordinators.
Benalla swimmers have also represented their club in recent short course competitions in Wangaratta and Shepparton, with impressive personal results.
Benalla Swimming Club has places available for new members in its junior, development and senior teams. The club offers bespoke training programs designed to improve swimming technique and general fitness in a positive and fun environment. Come and try sessions are available.
