Swimming & Dive adds former Ute Brody Lewis to coaching staff

SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah Swimming and Diving Head Coach Jonas Person announced the hiring of a former Utah swimmer brody lewiswho will join the Utes as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2022-23 season.

“We’re thrilled to bring Brody back to Utah as a former team captain,” Persson said. “He brings great leadership qualities, knowledge of the program, and his passion for Utah athletics is unmatched.”

A graduate of the University of Utah’s Class of 2020, Lewis returns to her alma mater after spending a season at the University of Northern Colorado as an assistant swimming and diving coach for the women’s program. During his short time with the Bears, Lewis made an immediate impact, helping the team break 16 school records and record 81 top-10 performances in UNC history. At the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships, Lewis was instrumental in coaching eight swimmers to win a conference championship and guiding 23 others to WAC podiums.

Outside of the pool, Lewis assisted the head coach with day-to-day and long-term operations. Lewis also led national and international recruitment efforts, drylands programming and team building activities.

Prior to UNC, Lewis served as head swim coach for East High School for one season and helped the 11-14 age group with the Swim Utah club for three years. At East High, Lewis coached two of his athletes to win 5A Individual State Championships. For Swim Utah, Lewis’ expertise has helped his athletes achieve multiple Utah State Qualifiers, State Championships, Section Qualifiers and two of his athletes have been named Junior National Finalists.

As a student-athlete at the U, Lewis qualified for Pac-12 championships in each of his four years and made the NCAA B Cut Qualifier in 2017, 2018, and 2020. He owns the fourth fastest 200 breaststroke time in program history as well as the sixth fastest 100 breaststroke time. In 2020, Lewis qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke.

Academically, Lewis landed on the Pac-12 varsity teams three times from 2018-2020 and was a CSCAA All-American scholar.

A team captain for the Utes, Lewis received the Utah Athletics Dr. Chris Hill Leadership Award and the Utah Swim & Dive Ute Proud Coach Award. Additionally, Lewis was a male representative for the University of Utah’s SAAC Pac-12 conference and the co-chair and leadership director of the University of Utah’s Crimson Council.

Lewis is from Greeley, Colorado, where he attended Greeley West High School and was an All-American, Scholastic All-American, 5A State Champion in the 100 chest, two-time conference champion and three-time tag team MVP. A dual-sport athlete, Lewis also competed for the cross-country team where he earned second-team All-State honors and was named an All-Region twice.
