Swim club moves to Accrington and pays tribute to late head coach

A swimming club is booming after starting a new chapter in its history.

The Great Harwood Otters have now completed their permanent move from Mercer Hall to Accrington Academy, having used the Hyndburn Leisure Center as their temporary home. This boost has allowed the club to get more pool time and accommodate more swimmers.

To mark the celebration of their new home, swimmers and parents took part in a sponsored walking challenge between their old and new HQ. The event raised over £900 through sponsorship and cake sales. The Otters have also named new head coach Dylan Slater, who has been a huge hit with swimmers and their parents – evident at recent galas and presentation events.

During the presentation, special awards in memory of the late former head coach Derrick Miller were presented to team captains Jacob Hacking and Madeleine Burnett by Derrick’s daughter Carol Methven and granddaughter Arielle Methven.

Derrick, who died last year, was an integral part of the Great Harwood Otters and is missed. This award is dedicated to his memory, which will now live on throughout the club. The Otters have three practice groups that practice Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at Accrington Academy as well as two course groups.
