The Chattogram Port Authority inaugurated a new aquatic complex, although the existing two, built by the municipality, remained unused for a long time.

In addition, the port city has a few small-scale private swimming pools, mostly attached to luxury hotels.

Predictably, many people wondered why the port authorities proposed the project rather than further developing port infrastructure and increasing cargo handling capacity amid increasing pressure on the busiest seaport in the world. country after the reopening of the economy.

Seeking not to be named, a CPA official says port workers are still working under tremendous pressure. The opportunities for relaxation have not been sufficient or satisfactory for them. The new project is mainly to make it easier for them to exercise so that they can free themselves from boredom and develop vigor in terms of physical and mental exercise.

However, business leaders and members of civil society have said that the focus now needs to be on increasing the port’s capacity. Recreational facilities should be the second priority.

“Building a swimming pool at a cost of Tk 19 million of public funds is a luxury in these critical Covid-induced times,” said Akhter Kabir Chowdhury, chattogram chairman of the Sacheton Nagorik committee.

The authorities are expected to significantly increase the port’s capacity, he added.

Mahbubul Alam, chairman of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says the port needs modern equipment, infrastructure and other facilities as a priority.

“Swimming complexes and leisure facilities are also needed at the port as they will positively help prepare for port activities,” he told The Business Standard.

Built at a cost of Tk 16 crore, the latest swimming complex in Chattogram Harbor is open to everyone, although the main purpose of the complex is to make swimming easier for harbor employees and their families. .

“We are preparing a policy for the operation of the pool. There will be an opportunity for foreigners to become members of the pool through a provision of special fees paid,” said Mohammad Omar Faruque, secretary of the CPA.

He told The Business Standard that the CPA will hold regular competitions at the swimming complex as well as at a tennis court and basketball court, which staff members from other organizations in town can participate in.

CPA officials hope the pool will help those, including families of port staff, interested in becoming national-level swimmers. In addition to practice, beginners can learn to swim at the resort under the guidance of a team of expert coaches.

Besides the aquatic complex, the authorities have set up a tennis court and a basketball court in the port area at a cost of Tk 3.33 crore.

Authorities hope the facilities will make port officials physically energetic.

Characteristics of the complex

The international standard swimming complex was built on 1,250 square meters of land – 50 meters in length and 25 meters in width.

Minister of State for Navigation Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury opened the complex on January 2.

A total of 400 people can participate in swimming activities in the resort’s gallery through its two swimming pools – one for learners and the other for competitors.

Eight people can participate in a swimming competition at a time, while dozens of people can practice in the learner pool.

In addition, the complex houses 16 VIP shower areas, saunas and steam rooms, separate for men and women.

Built by Ms. QHMCSL, it also has a fitness center and first aid facilities.
