International gold for Redditch Swimming Club captain

Paul Wilkes, male captain of Redditch Swimming Club, won gold in the 200m butterfly at the LEN European Masters Swimming Championships held at Stadio Nuoto, Rome, Italy from August 28-4 september.

Paul, a swimmer for the City of Birmingham Masters Squad, competed in the 35-39 age group and finished the race in 2m.11.59s over three and a half seconds ahead of his second-placed rival.

Paul undertook all his training at the Redditch Swimming Club where he trained with the new national team. The aim of the team is to develop Redditch swimmers to reach their maximum potential and be competitive at regional and national level. Paul’s success at the European Masters Championships is a great example of what can be achieved by committing to the sport and is a fabulous role model for young swimmers.

Paul Hartland, club vice-chairman, said: “It’s great to see Paul’s name next to the Union flag at the top of the results list. The club’s successes over the past 12 months have been unprecedented. The club secured 1st place in Worcester County Championship gold medals, won the Worcester Winter League for only the second time in club history, secured 4th place in the National Arena Regional Final League and won the Worcester County Team Relay competition. . Our Head Coach, Jon Fletcher, was appointed to the role in August 2021. Supported by a talented coaching staff, Jon has taken the club to new heights and the establishment of a new team structure aims to reach higher.

The Redditch Swimming Club has also recently developed an approach where local businesses can sponsor the club.
