Girls Swimming and Diving: Melrose wins title at Park Rapids Invitational – Park Rapids Enterprise

PARK RAPIDS — Hallie Drossel broke the meet and pool record in the 100-meter breaststroke by leading the Melrose girls’ swimming and diving team to the title at the Park Rapids Invitational at the Area High School pool on Saturday September 17.

Drossel clocked 1:06.42 to break the meet and pool record of 1:07.71 set by Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy in 2013. The record performance helped Melrose compile 639 points for dominate the field of four teams. Park Rapids finished second with 608 points while Sauk Center (456) and Perham/New York Mills (351) followed.

Addison Lauwagie was instrumental in the winning two-times for the host Panthers. Lauwagie won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.67 and led the winning team in the 200 freestyle relay from Park Rapids, which clocked 1:47.10. Avery Schueller, Mylee Edevold and Emma Vrieze completed this relay team.

Vrieze in the 100m freestyle (58.21), Maya Deshayes in the 500m freestyle (5:57.24) and the 400m freestyle relay unit of Lauwagie, Lizzie Seifert, Deshayes and Vrieze (4:00.07) added second-place efforts for the Panthers. .

After Allie Rowland finished fourth in diving with 196.90 points and to start this meet, Park Rapids opened the swimming events with a 3-4 trio.

Lauwagie, Massie Lee, Edevold and Schueller clocked 2:03.89 while Maria Wagner, McKenzie Himango, Claire Voigt and Whitney Seifert clocked 2:09.97 in the 200 medley relay for the first result 3 -4. Deshayes (in 2:14.22) and Lizzie Seifert (in 2:14.39) finished 3-4 in the 200 freestyle ahead of Edevold (in 2:33.63), Lee (in 2;33.78) and Amelia Bagstad (in 2:36.65) a record of 3-4-5 in the 200 IM.

Vrieze was third in 26.45 and Schueller was sixth in 27.29 in the 50 freestyle, Edevold was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.54 and Schueller was fourth in the 100 freestyle in 59.25.

Lizzie Seifert was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 6:12.31 before joining Himango, Bagstad and Deshayes in Park Rapids’ other 200 freestyle relay team which clocked 1:56.61 for the fourth place. The Panthers went 3-4-5-6 in the 100 breaststroke behind Lee (1:19.41), Himango (1:19.81), Gabi Shepersky (1:20.84) and Nora Cederstrom (1:20.84).

Voigt was seventh in 1:11.88 to lead the Panthers in the 100 backstroke.

“I think we swam very well against three good teams. Reunion week is tough, but they did well,” Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze said. “I told the girls not to compare their times with last year. Our training is much harder than last year and I told them that you weren’t the same swimmer as last year. Mentally we’re way ahead of where we were this time last year. One thing I’m happy about is that we’re still pretty consistent. The girls are tired, but we’re in a good place.
