From swimming to walking, tips and exercises for a better quality of life for asthma patients

According to research published in the Journal of Health Psychology, encouraging fitness treatments in asthma patients can improve their quality of life. The University of East Anglia undertook the study to examine whether physical activities such as aerobics and strength or resistance training can help people with asthma.

People with asthma frequently avoid strenuous activities because they become exhausted and have difficulty breathing. However, some well-planned treatments might encourage individuals to perform small workouts to improve their health.

Here are some tips that can help you perform at your best when exercising, even if you have asthma.

Before exercising, use an inhaler. As pre-exercise therapy, your doctor may prescribe a pre-exercise inhaler. These inhaled medications relax the airways, making it easier to breathe during exercise.

Take medication for long-term relief. If a pre-exercise inhaler fails to relieve your symptoms, you may be prescribed another medication. This may include oral medications or additional inhalers that reduce airway irritation.

Warm up before exercising to allow your body to adapt. When you are done, slowly finish the exercises.
When it’s cold outside, cover your nose and mouth. The dryness of fresh air can constrict your airways.

Swimming is one of the most recommended workouts for asthma patients. It is less likely to trigger asthma-related symptoms than other activities.

While walking

Walking is another great low intensity workout. This type of training is gentle on the body, making it easier to breathe.


Another alternative is to take a leisurely hike. Choose a path that is reasonably flat or has a gradual, steady climb. If you have allergies, check the pollen level in your area before you hike. Walk only if pollen levels are low.

Cycling for fun

If you have EIB, go for a moderate bike ride. It is another moderate hobby that does not require continuous effort. Indoor cycling on a stationary bike is also an option.


If you want to run, choose short distance running exercises like sprints. Due to the constant exertion required, jogging a long distance on a track or outdoors may not be suggested for people with more severe uncontrolled asthma.
