2022 World Para Swimming Championships

More than 500 athletes from 59 countries are expected to take part in the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira from June 12-18 in what will be the largest international parasport event to take place in Portugal.

Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is more than the birthplace of soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo – the island has a history of hosting international Para-swimming events as the venue for the Open European Championships in 2016 and 2021 .

Originally set for 2021, the competition was moved to this summer due to the postponement of the Tokyo Paralympic Games from 2020 to 2021. At the last World Championships three years ago in London, Italy led the way with 50 medals in total, including 20 gold. – one ahead of Great Britain.
