A children’s swimming lessons program will take place for the first time during the summer in Aberdeenshire

Young people learning to swim in Aberdeenshire will have the chance to make up for lost time with Live Life Aberdeenshire’s Learn to Swim program continuing throughout the summer.

Normally, the Learn to Swim program only takes place during school term, with intensive courses offered at local swimming pools during the summer holidays.

But in response to customer demand, the temporary Learn to Swim program will continue through the summer months.

It was introduced to replace the comprehensive Learn to Swim Aberdeenshire program, which has been suspended due to site and teaching capacity restrictions due to the pandemic.

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesperson said: ‘The temporary program currently provides around 3,000 lessons per week, up from around 9,000 per week before Covid.

“The capacity to deliver lessons continues to be reduced due to social distancing in the facilities and the decrease in the number of instructors available.

“Many are involved in the provision of other sport and leisure activities throughout the region, with others being redeployed to support vaccination centers and working in health and social care settings.

“It is hoped that the pursuit of summer will make up for some of the time children have wasted in the pool due to local blockages and help cope with a growing waiting list.

“This will provide continuity for participants, allowing them to achieve rapid progression and thus create space available for others as participants progress through ability levels.”

Particular concerns were expressed by parents whose children were attending classes at Turriff Pool, where prolonged work means the pool will remain out of service for most of the summer and for whom, other class locations will not. did not materialize despite assurances from council that classes would be offered in other locations.
